The $Free.99 Tier

Starting Out With $0 Budget

When first getting into DJing, it can be daunting seeing prices as high as $2,000 per piece of equipment (around $10,000+) for a new 4 channel/deck "industry standard" setup. For almost all starting out, this is going to be completely off the table. Thankfully, it's actually possible to get started DJing these days with devices you might already own... A computer, keyboard and mouse, or even just a smartphone and audio device! Starting with $0 budget, these are going to be your go to devices for starting to produce music mixes.

  • Laptop or computer with keyboard and mouse, running free software such as Virtual DJ. You can play the audio off your computer speakers, or connect to headphones/external speakers using your computer's built in sound card (if you have a built in sound card capable of routing to external).
    • An option I used to do first starting out was using VDJ and my desktop with hooked up computer speakers. At the time, I had a USB hyperx cloud headset, which actually ran it's own soundcard. So I could select my headphones for the monitor/cue.
  • Smartphone capable of downloading DJ apps from the app store. You can play the audio off the device speakers, or plug into headphones or bluetooth devices.
